Participate in the UofL Women's Stress & Aging Study!

1 in 4 Women has experienced an extremely stressful relationship in her lifetime. The Women’s Stress & Aging Study, through the support of the National Institutes of Health, is looking for women who are 45- 60 years old and have been divorced or permanently separated for over 2 months. This divorce or separation may have occurred at any time in their adult life (since age 18). We hope to uncover important information about how women's aging may be affected by stress. Due to the nature of the study, we are also looking for women who are postmenopausal, physically healthy, and not currently taking medications. Participation includes two visits to the University of Louisville Hospital and two blood draws. If you think you may be interested in participating please call our all-woman research office at (502) 767-2517 Monday through Friday for a confidential phone interview to find out if you are eligible to participate. Compensation is provided for your participation.

As researchers committed to women’s health, we are writing to tell you about the University of Louisville Women’s Stress & Aging Study. This is a study for women, ages 45 to 60, who have survived a stressful marriage or intimate relationship.

Why is this study important?
One in five women in the United States is between the ages of 45 and 60. Life stress can affect the quality of these vital years. Surviving an extremely stressful marriage or intimate relationship is, unfortunately, a common event experienced by 25% of American women. Your participation in this study will help us understand how such experiences affect women’s emotional and physical health. In the long run, this study may help us learn ways to promote healthy aging in women.

Who can participate in this study? Are you…
  • 45 to 60 years of age?
  • Physically healthy?
  • Not currently taking medications?
  • No longer having a period? (no period for at least 1 year?)
If you answered “yes” to the above questions, and if you have ever left a stressful marriage or intimate relationship since you were 18 years old, you may be able to participate.

What does participation in this study involve?
  • Two appointments at the University of Louisville Hospital Clinical Research Center that include:
    • One-on-one interviews with our all-female research staff
    • Questions about your personality, physical and mental health, and relationship experiences
    • Two blood draws
  • Parking at no cost
  • Compensation is provided for your participation

How do I learn more about this study?
We invite you to call our research office at (502) 767-2517. Because of our commitment to confidentiality, we do not take voicemail messages or have caller ID. However, study staff are available to speak with you most times Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday and Thursday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. We will gladly answer your questions about the study or arrange for you to complete a confidential phone interview to find out if you are able to participate. If we happen to miss your call, we sincerely hope you will try again.
