Welcome to our new Champions!

Denise Spalding and Jennifer Eberle of Allegra Print & Imaging East present the FootPRINT Award to Cyndi Moreno, Director of Development for
Women 4 Women.
Denise Spalding and Jennifer Eberle of Allegra Print & Imaging East have joined the Women 4 Women Champions Club thanks to a generous in-kind donation. On February 29, Allegra held a luncheon to announce support for this year’s FootPRINT recipients—these included Women 4 Women and the Champions 4 Her Walk, Run & Festival. The Allegra FootPRINT Fund Grant Program was established to provide community support through in-kind design and print work for local non-profit organizations. Allegra has given two percent of every dollar in sales back to the community and has awarded in-kind donations valued at over $200,000 in the last five years. The luncheon featured a “Going Green” presentation by David Beebe of Mohawk Fine Papers. “We wanted to provide these leaders of the nonprofit community with educational information on how we can print responsibly and join together to be good environmental stewards,” said Denise Spalding, co-owner of Allegra.

Women 4 Women extends our gratitude to Denise and Jennifer for their quality work and leadership in becoming Champions for women and the environment. Welcome to the Club!

Fit 4 Me Celebrates Fitness Fest!

The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Fit 4 Me program is a 6-week after-school nutrition and fitness program, led by Women 4 Women, that is designed to improve the health and wellness of underserved middle school girls. The program encourages healthy lifestyles through health and nutrition lessons and physical activity sessions led by University of Louisville women athletes. This spring, the program was offered at Farnsley Middle School as well as a new site, Iroquois Middle School.

Also this spring, a fun Fitness Fest event was added for the girls and their families in order to conduct medical screenings for early detection of diabetes, high cholesterol levels and/or high blood pressure. Of those who participated, 28% were identified with elevated screening levels and were counseled by both a nurse and dietitian about lifestyle changes that they could make to lower their results. They were also referred to their personal physician for follow up. Along with the screenings, the Fitness Fest included a healthy cooking demo, educational displays and physical activity stations.

Extreme Heights, an international championship jump rope team, performed at Iroquois. After watching the energizing performance, the girls gave it a shot themselves and are now excited to start their own team. We would like to thank Lynn Winter, owner of Lynn’s Paradise Café, for making their performance possible.

We would also like to congratulate Ben Langley, Youth Service Center Coordinator at Iroquois Middle School, on his selection as a winner of the 2008 Mayor’s Youth Service Worker Awards. Ben was nominated by Women 4 Women to show our appreciation for his efforts to promote and coordinate the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation Fit 4 Me Program at Iroquois Middle School.
