Women 4 Women teams up with Center for Gender-Specific Medicine
at Jewish Hospital Medical Center East

.
Helping women and girls improve their health is the goal of a new partnership between Women 4 Women and the Center for Gender-Specific Medicine at Jewish Hospital Medical Center East.

From the way hearts beat to the way medication is metabolized, every system of the body has unique and significant gender-based differences. Gender-specific medicine recognizes and addresses those differences so that prevention and treatment of disease are more effective.

The partnership between Women 4 Women and the Center for Gender-Specific Medicine will focus on educating women about advances that can help them protect and improve their health.

"Working together works, and we have a genuine desire to work closely with Women 4 Women to make tangible and long-lasting contributions in the local health care arena," said Shelley Bishop, assistant vice president of Jewish Hospital Medical Center East.

"Both sexes win when medical care is tailored to their unique physiologies," added Ann Coffey, executive director of Women 4 Women. "Partnering with the Center for Gender-Specific Medicine is an ideal fit with our goal of making Louisville one of the best places for girls, women and their families to live and work."
Council member Call donates $10,000 to expand Fit4Me

Council member Ellen Call
Louisville Metro Council member Ellen Call proposed spending $10,000 of her discretionary neighborhood fund for the Fit4Me program, sponsored by Women 4 Women in partnership with the University of Louisville, Bellarmine University and others. The Louisville Metro Council unanimously approved the grant at its July 28 meeting.

Fit4Me is a holistic program that teaches middle-school girls from low-income families about health, fitness, nutrition and self-esteem. Its goal is to reduce rates of pregnancy, substance abuse, smoking and obsesity among our community's teen-agers.

Call said Fit4Me fills an important need in the Louisville community. "There are so few programs that teach young girls about the importance of fitness and good nutrition, and the Fit4Me pilot program showed tremendous promise," she said.
