Women 4 Women remembers Minx Auerbach

Louisville community leader Minx Auerbach, who died Feb. 16, was a friend to Women 4 Women for many years. In addition, Auerbach, the first woman to chair the local planning commission and the board of the University of Louisville, was a role model for us all. She contributed to the Louisville community in so many ways, inspiring other women to follow her example. She will be sorely missed.

U of L and Women 4 Women expand Fit4Me partnership

Fit4Me, our pilot health and self-esteem program for at-risk middle-school girls, has expanded to three longer sessions this school year and will soon have a full-time director.

The University of Louisville's College of Education and Human Development and Women 4 Women will share the cost of the director's salary, and U of L will oversee the program.

Fit4Me, now in its second year, helps girls ages 10 and older build self-esteem by developing healthy eating and exercise habits and learning other skills. The idea is to reduce the rate of teen pregnancy, obesity and smoking in Louisville.

College students at U of L Athletics and Bellarmine University participate as role models for the girls during regular weekly sessions.

Here's the response of one public-school teacher to the University of Louisville women's basketball players who volunteered in the program with her students during the fall of 2005:

"I want you to know they were awesome! My kids loved them and they were great mentors...they never missed a Thursday or the finale at the fun dome. Your girls worked with a very 'at risk' group. My kids are mostly poor and rough...The odd thing was, when your players were there, my kids melted. They loved seeing them each week. Your girls engaged in each activity and were not shy about getting close to the kids. I hope that we can work together again. MANY THANKS!"
Greetings, Deenie!
